Blackjack rules, and what each card is worth

Blackjack is played against the dealer, not against the other players at the table. Every hand is scored by adding its cards; the highest total that has not gone past 21 wins. Go past 21 and the hand is bust and lost immediately, whatever the dealer does afterwards.

A hand holding an ace counted as 11 is called soft, because it cannot bust on the next card — the ace simply drops to 1. Soft 17 is ace + 6; hard 17 is 10 + 7. The two hands share a number and almost nothing else, and every strategy chart treats them separately for that reason.

How a hand is settled

Two details in that table do most of the damage to a player’s results. The first is the blackjack payout, which is priced further down this page. The second is insurance: the dealer shows an ace and offers a side bet that the hole card is a ten. It pays 2:1, and a ten arrives 30.77% of the time, so the bet loses 7.6923% of every unit put on it — about 15 times the house edge of the game you are already playing. What each first card is actually worth works through that hand in full.

The dealer has no choices to make: they draw to a fixed number and stop, which is why the rule about soft 17 below is a rule and not a decision. You do have choices, and making them correctly is the whole of the game — the solved strategy for every hand covers which ones matter and by how much.

Blackjack payouts, and the rule that costs more than the game does

A blackjack — an ace with any ten-value card on the first two cards — has traditionally paid 3:2. A growing number of tables pay 6:5 instead. It looks like a small change to a payout most hands never collect. It is the most expensive thing on the table.

Read the fourth row against the first. Moving the blackjack payout from 3:2 to 6:5 costs 1.3529% — more than 2.65 times the entire house edge of the game it replaces. No decision you make at the table comes close to it, and the rule is printed on the felt before you sit down.

The other two rules are worth knowing and are much smaller. A dealer who hits soft 17 costs 0.2194%; losing the right to double after a split costs 0.1416%. Together they are still less than a third of what 6:5 costs on its own.

Put all three on one table and the house edge goes from 0.5096% to 2.2261% — 4.37 times as expensive, playing exactly the same cards to exactly the same strategy. That is the whole reason to read the rules before the seat.

Online blackjack conclusion

Blackjack has the lowest house edge of any game in the lobby when it is played well at a table with decent rules: 0.5096%, or roughly half a unit for every hundred staked. Nothing else on the floor is that cheap. But that number assumes two things, and neither is automatic — a 3:2 table, and correct play on every hand.

Check the payout line first, because it is fixed before you play and it is worth more than everything you do afterwards. Then play the hands correctly. Even at 0.5096% the number is not in your favour, so set a budget before you sit down and treat it as the price of the entertainment. 18+.
