    Baccarat Rules

Illustration of online Baccarat with Player and Banker card zones and casino chips

Baccarat is the simplest game on a casino floor to play, because you make exactly one decision per round: which of three boxes to put your chips in. Everything after that is fixed by rule. Two hands are dealt — Player and Banker — and the hand closer to 9 wins. Online games use 6 or 8 decks depending on the provider, with 8 the usual choice at live tables.

The one thing that trips up newcomers is that Player and Banker are the names of two hands, not two people. You are not “the Player”; you are a bettor who can back either hand, and backing the Banker is both allowed and, as the numbers below show, slightly the better bet.

    Card Values

Card values in baccarat are simple, and there is no joker in the shoe:

    • Cards 2 through 9 are worth their face value — a 4 counts 4, a 9 counts 9.
    • 10, Jack, Queen and King are all worth zero.
    • The Ace counts 1.

A hand can never be worth more than 9. When two cards add up to double figures, the tens digit is dropped and only the units digit counts: a hand of 7 + 5 = 12 is worth 2, and 9 + 6 = 15 is worth 5. This is why there is no “bust” in baccarat — a hand simply wraps around.

When Is a Third Card Drawn in Baccarat?

This is the part of baccarat that looks complicated, and it is worth stating clearly what it is not: it is not a decision. Neither you nor the dealer chooses whether a third card comes out. The drawing rules are fixed, the software applies them automatically, and at a live table the dealer follows the same chart. You never have to know them to play — but they are what produces the house edge, so here they are in full.

First, the override: if either hand totals 8 or 9 on its first two cards that is a natural, both hands stand, and the round is settled immediately. Otherwise the Player hand acts first, then the Banker.

    Hand Two-card total What happens
    Player 0 – 5 Draws a third card
    Player 6 – 7 Stands
    Banker — Player stood 0 – 5 Draws a third card
    Banker — Player stood 6 – 7 Stands
Banker — Player drew 0 – 2 Always draws, whatever the Player’s third card
Banker — Player drew 3 Draws, unless the Player’s third card is an 8
Banker — Player drew 4 Draws only if the Player’s third card is 2 – 7
Banker — Player drew 5 Draws only if the Player’s third card is 4 – 7
Banker — Player drew 6 Draws only if the Player’s third card is 6 or 7
Banker — Player drew 7 Always stands
Either hand 8 – 9 Natural — both hands stand and the round is settled

Read down the Banker rows and the shape of the game appears. The Banker acts second and its rules depend on what the Player’s third card was, so the Banker gets a small informational advantage on every coup. That advantage is the reason the Banker hand wins more often, and the reason the casino charges 5% commission on it — without the commission the Banker bet would be a winning proposition for the bettor.

    Playing Options in Baccarat Online

Because the drawing is automatic, baccarat has no hit-or-stand decision for you to make. Your whole role is choosing a box and a stake before the cards come out. What the interface does ask you is:

    • Which bet — Player, Banker or Tie, plus any side bets the table offers, such as Player Pair and Banker Pair.
    • How much — chip size, within the table’s minimum and maximum.
    • Whether to repeat — most online tables have a Rebet button that puts the same chips back for the next coup.

Some live tables also offer a squeeze or “no commission” variant. In no-commission baccarat you keep the full 1:1 on a Banker win, but a Banker win on a total of 6 pays only half. A Banker win on 6 happens 5.3864% of the time, and halving it costs more than the commission does: 1.4581% against 1.0579%. The version that looks like it removes a charge is the more expensive one.

    How to Play Baccarat Online

Now that you have understood the rules, you can start playing baccarat for real money. Like other online casino games, playing baccarat is pretty straightforward. You will need to choose a casino before you can place a bet, though. Follow our step-by-step guide below to start your journey.

Estimated Time Needed: 05:00 Tools Needed: PC, Smartphone, Tablet Supplies Needed: Time, Money
Find a Baccarat Casino Step 1
    Find a Baccarat Casino

The first step  is to find a casino that offers the game. The good news is that there are numerous options to choose from. Where it gets tricky is knowing which casino site is right for you and can cater to your gaming needs. Just ensure that you only play with a licensed and regulated gambling site. For your convenience, you can choose from our recommended online baccarat casinos.

    Create an Account Step 2
    Create an Account

Once you have selected a casino baccarat site to play with, you need to create an account to gain access to real money gambling. To do this, visit the official site and provide the necessary information to create an account. Some of the information needed includes your name (first and last name), email address, date of birth, phone number, username, contact address, and password.

    Place Your Bets Step 3
    Place Your Bets

With an active account, you can start placing bets, but you need to first fund your account. Visit the casino's cashier area to make a deposit. Note that all casinos on our list offer secure transactions. Choose the payment options that interest you, enter the amount you want to deposit, and the money will reflect instantly. Before you start playing for real money, you need to choose a style of play.

Check the Cards Dealt Step 4
    Check the Cards Dealt

After the bet is placed, two cards are dealt to both the Player and the Banker. You will understand how to calculate your points if you have read our rules section. Remember that you need a hand that's closest to 9 to win the game. Also, you can bet on the Player’s or Banker’s hand or whether the game will end in a tie.

    Bets in Baccarat Online Game

Online baccarat betting layout with Player, Banker and Tie boxes, chips on Player, and a dealt hand of 6-3 for Player against King-7 for Banker

There are three main boxes on a baccarat layout, plus a pair of side bets at most tables. Because the drawing rules are fixed, every one of these has a house edge that can be calculated exactly rather than estimated, and it is the same at every casino running the same shoe. The figures below are for the standard eight-deck game.

Bet Chance of winning Pays House edge RTP
    Banker 45.8597% 1:1 less 5% commission 1.0579% 98.9421%
    Player 44.6247% 1:1 1.2351% 98.7649%
    Banker, no-commission table (6 pays 1:2) 45.8597% 1:1, except 1:2 on a winning 6 1.4581% 98.5419%
    Tie at 9:1 9.5156% 9:1 4.8440% 95.1560%
    Player Pair / Banker Pair 7.4699% 11:1 10.3614% 89.6386%
    Tie at 8:1 9.5156% 8:1 14.3596% 85.6404%

Three things follow from that table and none of them are obvious at the table.

    Banker’s Hand

The Banker hand wins 45.8597% of coups against the Player’s 44.6247%, because the Banker acts second and its drawing rules react to the Player’s third card. The 5% commission exists to take that advantage back: without it the Banker bet would return more than it costs. Even with the commission it remains the cheapest bet on the layout at 1.0579%, and one of the cheapest bets in any casino.

    Player’s Hand

The Player hand pays a clean 1:1 with no commission deducted, which makes it feel like the better deal. It is not: at 1.2351% it costs about 17% more per unit staked than the Banker. The gap is small, but it runs the same direction on every coup, so there is no situation in which backing the Player is the better mathematical choice.

    Tie Bet

The two hands finish level 9.5156% of the time — roughly one coup in ten and a half. The payout decides everything: at 9:1 the Tie costs 4.8440%, and at 8:1 it costs 14.3596%, nearly three times as much for the identical event. Most online tables pay 8:1, so check the paytable before backing it; there is nothing on the felt that flags which version you are playing.

At 8:1 the Tie is the most expensive bet on a baccarat table by a wide margin, and it is the single biggest cost decision available in the game.

    Pair Side Bets

Player Pair and Banker Pair win when that hand’s first two cards are the same rank. In an eight-deck shoe the second card matches the first 31 times in 415, or 7.4699%, and the standard 11:1 payout leaves a 10.3614% house edge — worse than everything except the 8:1 Tie.

Does the Number of Decks Matter?

Barely, which sets baccarat apart from sic bo or dragon tiger, where shoe size moves the numbers noticeably. Across a full enumeration of every possible coup, the Banker edge is 1.0579% on eight decks, 1.0558% on six and 1.0117% on a single deck; the Player is 1.2351%, 1.2374% and 1.2864%. The Tie is the only bet that moves at all meaningfully, from 14.3596% on eight decks to 15.7461% on one. If a table advertises fewer decks, it is not offering you a better game.

How We Find Reputable Online Baccarat Casinos

The first step in your iGaming journey is to find reputable baccarat casinos. This is important because it goes a long way towards determining if you'll enjoy the experience or lose all your bankroll. There are lots of fraudulent sites that want to rip baccarat players. So you should conduct in-depth background checks before you register with a site. However, we have made the search easy by providing you with a list of trustworthy casino sites where you can play baccarat for real money. We have tested these sites using stringent criteria to ensure they are reliable options before listing them. We have provided you with some of the criteria used during this process to validate our process.

    1 Licencing and Reputation

Licensing comes first. A regulator sets the rules an operator has to follow on player funds, identity checks and game testing, and it is the licence that gives a player somewhere to complain to. The bodies whose licences carry real obligations include the UK Gambling Commission, the Malta Gaming Authority and the Curaçao Gaming Authority, and the licence details belong in the footer of the casino site where anyone can check them.

    2 Game Providers

Another criterion we check out before including a casino on our list is the kind of game providers it features. This will have a significant impact on the types of baccarat games available on the site. We check the operator's game library to see their collection. We mainly consider top developers like Microgaming, NetEnt, Playtech, Pragmatic Play, Play'n GO, Evolution, Ezugi, and Red Tiger Gaming.

    3 Payment Methods

It's known that most players wager online for entertainment. Likewise, players don't want to experience delays in withdrawing their payouts when they play and win. So it's important to consider the payment options before you start gambling at a casino. Some of the popular banking methods we consider include Visa, Bank Transfer, Mastercard, NETELLER, PayPal, Interac, iDebit, and Skrill payment method or cryptocurrencies.

    4 Bonuses

Another important factor to consider is the variety of bonuses available for baccarat games. A reputable online casino for Baccarat games will provide several bonuses for players to benefit from. These could include welcome bonuses, cashback bonuses, no-deposit bonuses, reload bonuses, and VIP rewards. These can boost your bankroll and help you increase your winning chances.

    Online Baccarat Bonuses

Bonuses are one of the tactics used by online gambling sites to appeal to players to join their sites and keep playing. However, online casino bonuses also benefit the players as they can help them increase their bankroll, giving them more shots at winning. You can claim several types of bonuses online, depending on the casino you choose to play with. Below are some common bonuses you’ll find at reputable baccarat gambling sites.

    Welcome Bonuses

This is the most common bonus you’ll find at casinos across the industry. Welcome bonuses are offered to new players as an incentive for joining a casino site. That means the bonuses are only valid for players just joining the casino. Additionally, this casino bonus can come in two forms: deposit and no-deposit bonuses.

    No Deposit Bonuses

As the name suggests, casino no deposit bonuses allow players do not need to deposit before they can claim the offer. Register with a casino that features the bonus, and your account will be credited upon activation. It’s the most beneficial offer to players, especially new baccarat gamblers. You can learn the game rules without risking the bankroll with a no-deposit bonus. Also, if you’re lucky, you can win real money at these games. Players should note that the no-deposit bonus fund is small and comes with strict requirements.

    Deposit Bonuses

Unlike the no-deposit bonus, you can only claim this casino bonus when you register and fund your account. It’s usually a percentage of the amount you deposit. Aside from that, you need to deposit a certain qualifying amount to be eligible. The most common deposit welcome bonus is the 100% match offer, but some casinos offer more, especially when the welcome package is spread over multiple deposits.

If you register with a casino offering a 100% match deposit bonus, the operator will double your deposit amount. So if you deposit $100, you’ll get an additional $100 to play with. Notably, deposit bonus funds are usually higher than their no-deposit counterpart.

    Cashback Bonuses

Players are always skeptical of gambling online because they don’t want to lose their money. However, it’s vital to note that losing is part of gambling and can’t be eliminated. Some online casinos for baccarat offer players a bonus to compensate them for their losses over a period of time.

This casino bonus is known as a cashback bonus. So players don’t need to worry when they wager with real money. Cashback bonuses come in percentages, and the value depends on the casino you’re playing with. Most online casinos reward you with up to 20% cashback bonuses, but a few might offer more.

    Reload Bonuses

This casino bonus works similarly to the deposit bonus, but reload bonuses are usually smaller. These bonuses are valid for regular players who make subsequent deposits with a casino operator. You can receive up to 20% in bonuses on every deposit you make as you continue to play at the casino. Like the deposit bonus, reload bonuses are a percentage of your deposit.

    VIP Rewards

Every online business will create a scheme to reward loyal customers, and the online gambling industry is no exception. Players who are loyal and bet regularly at a gambling site are often rewarded with exclusive bonuses and other perks.

Most casino sites require you to be a high roller before you can start enjoying VIP rewards. Also, the VIP program comes with a tier-bonus system, where your levels determine the bonuses you can claim. Rewards for VIP players include cashback bonuses, low wagering requirements, birthday bonuses, high withdrawal limits, tickets to exclusive events, and more.

Play Live Dealer Baccarat with Real Money

Playing Live Dealer Baccarat at a casino site gives you a taste of real-world gambling. Unlike regular baccarat, where the computer is responsible for dealing the cards, in Live Dealer Baccarat, you’ll have access to human dealers and experience the action in real-time. Many online casinos have a Live Casino section where you can play a variety of live baccarat variations.

With this live version, you can enjoy a more immersive and exciting gambling experience. These games are streamed in high-quality audio and video directly from the developer’s studio. Another benefit of playing Live Dealer Baccarat is chatting with the dealer. There are different baccarat tables, so you must choose one.

Notably, Live Dealer Baccarat doesn’t have a demo version, so you can practice with a demo version. Therefore, it’s not a starting point for players new to the game. Regular baccarat, on the other hand, allows you to practice with a free version. So you can try that out before wagering Live Dealer Baccarat with real money.

    What Are Common Baccarat Strategies?

Baccarat is a game of pure chance: you place a bet, the drawing rules do the rest, and nothing you do changes the odds of a coup. That rules out one whole category of "strategy" straight away — no sequence of bets can beat a fixed edge, because the edge applies to every unit you stake regardless of the order you stake it in. What the systems below actually do is change how much you put through the table, and the cost follows the turnover exactly, as the table shows. The one decision that genuinely matters is which box you use: Banker at 1.0579% is the cheapest bet on the layout, Player costs 1.2351%, and the Tie costs 14.3596% at the 8:1 payout most tables use.

What the Betting Systems Actually Cost

A progression does not change your chance of winning any coup, so its whole effect is on how many units cross the table. Since the house edge is charged on every unit staked, the expected loss of a system is simply the edge multiplied by its turnover. Here is that arithmetic for the systems described below, all on the Banker bet at 1.0579%.

ApproachStake sequenceUnits stakedOverExpected lossvs flat betting
    Flat betting1, 1, 1, 144 coups0.0423 units
    1-3-2-4, full cycle1, 3, 2, 4104 coups0.1058 units2.5x the cost
    Flat betting1, 1, 133 coups0.0317 units
    Paroli, full run1, 2, 473 coups0.0741 units2.33x the cost
    Martingale, four losses1, 2, 4, 8154 coups0.1587 units3.75x the cost

That is the honest summary of every baccarat system ever sold: they redistribute when you win and lose, they raise your turnover, and the house takes 1.0579% of the larger number instead of the smaller one. None of them is a mistake to use if you enjoy the shape of the session — but none of them lowers the cost, and the ones that raise stakes fastest raise the cost fastest too.

    1-3-2-4

The 1-3-2-4 is a positive progression: you raise your stake after a win and drop back to the start after a loss. Pick a unit — say 10.000 VND — and the sequence is 1 unit, then 3, then 2, then 4. Win all four and you have staked 10 units and finished 10 units ahead, at which point you return to 1 unit and begin again. Lose at any point and you go straight back to 1 unit, which is the feature that separates it from the 1-3-2-6 it is derived from: the smaller fourth step means a loss on the last bet still leaves the cycle in profit.

Its appeal is that it caps your exposure — you are never risking more than the unit you started with plus winnings already banked. Its cost is in the table above: a completed cycle puts 10 units through the table over four coups where flat betting would put through 4.

    One-Sided

The one-sided approach is the simplest of the lot: pick either Banker or Player, and back it every coup without switching. It exists because shoes often produce streaks, and switching sides mid-streak is how players end up on the wrong side of every one of them.

If you use it, pick the Banker. The Banker hand wins 45.8597% of coups against the Player's 44.6247%, and even after the 5% commission it costs 1.0579% per unit against the Player's 1.2351%. That is settled arithmetic, not a preference — there is no shoe condition and no streak pattern that makes the Player side the cheaper one. Any guide recommending the Player hand because "the odds are equal and there is no commission" has the numbers backwards.

    Paroli

The Paroli is the other well-known positive progression: double your stake after each win, and stop after three consecutive wins. Starting at 10.000 VND the run is 10.000, then 20.000, then 40.000 — the doubling is the whole system, so the third bet is 40.000 and not 30.000. Any loss returns you immediately to the opening stake.

The attraction is that you are only ever raising stakes with money the table has just paid you, so a losing run costs one unit rather than a compounding sequence. Its total turnover over a completed run is 7 units across three coups, which is why it costs 2.33 times as much as flat betting the same three coups.

Deposit & Withdrawal Methods at Baccarat Casino Sites

Most online gambling sites require you to deposit before you can start playing their baccarat game for real money. Besides, bettors often gamble online for entertainment, and it’s vital that they can withdraw their winnings without stress. Therefore, you must consider the banking options available before registering with an operator. We’ll discuss some payment methods available at baccarat casino sites.

    Deposit Methods

Reputable baccarat online gambling sites will process deposits instantly, so players can start enjoying their favorite variants. Also, these casinos won’t charge players when they fund their accounts. To make a deposit, visit the cashier section, choose your preferred payment option, and follow the instructions.

    Withdrawal Methods

More often than not, you’ll find the same options available for deposits when it’s time to make your withdrawal request. However, you must check the terms and conditions, as some casinos might mandate that you use the same method for deposits and withdrawals. Unlike the deposit, withdrawal processing often takes longer to complete, usually between 24 hours and five working days, depending on your chosen method.

Pros and Cons of Online Baccarat

Playing baccarat offers several benefits, and bettors will enjoy their game sessions. While the game has some advantages, it also has some downsides that you need to be aware of. Below are the pros and cons of baccarat.

    Pros
    • Online baccarat is available on almost every gambling site around the world.
    • Baccarat variants don't differ much, so you won't need to learn new rules when changing to another version.
    • House edge of 1.0579% on the Banker bet and 1.2351% on the Player
    • You can have a small bankroll to play the game.
    Cons
    • Players who stake on the Banker's hand must pay a 5% commission.
    • Don't expect to win a fortune when wagering on real money baccarat.

The Most Famous Types of Baccarat Games for Real Money Online

Baccarat has several variations, each with its own set of rules and strategies. Here we take a look at the most famous types of baccarat games that are available to play for real money at online casinos.

    Punto Banco

This is also American Baccarat, and you'll find it on most online gambling sites. The game is easy to learn and has three primary betting options, but two are the most popular. This is Player-Punto and Bank-Banco, hence the name Punto Banco. Each winning hand in this baccarat version is subject to a 5% commission.

    Chemin de Fer

This is another famous type of baccarat game you can play online for real money. Chemin de Fer is a French word that translates to "Railway" in English. This type of baccarat game is rare at an online casino site. The game rules are almost the same as in Punto Banco. But in this case, the players are betting against each other. Each Player will act as the dealer at a certain point in the game. Also, the third card rules are flexible; you can decide to hit or draw your third card.

    Baccarat Banque

This version is known as “Two Table Baccarat” and has similar rules to “Chemin de Fer." Here, the Banker, one of the players, will remain a Banker until he steps down or goes bankrupt. Baccarat Banque has two tables with six players each. All the players will bet against the Banker and not each other.

    Mini Baccarat

This version of baccarat is also known as “Mini Punto Banco” because it's the smaller variant. The game comes with similar rules to the original “Punto Banco,"  but with a smaller table and a maximum of 7 players. Notably, this game is faster than the original one, taking about thirty seconds to complete a game round. If you're a low-budget player, this version of the game is your suitable option.

    Macao

This is another famous type you'll find on reputable gambling sites worldwide. Here, you're playing against the croupier and must reach a total hand of 9 with a minimum of two to three cards. This game is becoming increasingly popular among gambling sites, slowly replacing classic baccarat in popularity. Also, you can play the game under the names “No-Commission Baccarat” or “Punto Banco."

Play Casino Baccarat with Real Money via Mobile

The demand for mobile casinos has increased exponentially since the advent of mobile technology. People run almost all their activities from their mobile gadgets. Whether you want to shop for groceries or make payments for shopping, you can do it from the comfort of your home. The casino gambling industry is embracing this trend to stay relevant.

Baccarat gamblers want to be able to wager on their favorite variants from anywhere in the world. We therefore check what each site publishes about mobile support — which browsers and operating systems it lists, and whether it offers a dedicated app. We also take into account the number of baccarat games available on the mobile casino site. Some sites have a dedicated app you can download, while others don’t. But we ensure that you can access them through your mobile web browser before listing them.

    What Is Baccarat?

Baccarat is a card game that’s popular among casino sites. It’s a game between two hands: the Player and the Banker. Additionally, each baccarat game round has three possible outcomes: the Players, the Banker, and a tie. The hand value that’s closest to 9 is the winning bet.

Do Casinos Cheat in Online Baccarat Games?

No. However, most players might think so because the house wins more often, but this is different. Online baccarat uses a Random Number Generator software to determine the game’s outcome. This computer algorithm can’t be tampered with at a reputable online casino. Also, you should ensure that you play at a licensed casino.

Is There a Strategy That Works in Baccarat?

No strategy turns baccarat into a winning game — each coup is independent and the house keeps its edge whatever you bet. The one choice that measurably matters is which bet you make: the Banker bet carries a house edge of roughly 1.06% against about 1.24% on Player, while the Tie bet is far worse at around 14%. Betting systems such as Martingale change how losses are spread over time, not their expected size.

Can You Count Cards in Baccarat?

Yes. It’s possible to count cards in baccarat and gain a small edge. The aim is to determine whether the Banker or the layer will have a better advantage; you don’t need to consider the Tie bet. Notably, you don’t need to remember any cards; you only need to perform basic arithmetic.
