Lieng Rules: How to Play Liêng, the Vietnamese Three-Card Game

October 7, 2026 Lieng Rules: How to Play Liêng, the Vietnamese Three-Card Game

Liêng (also called cào liêng) is one of the best-known traditional card games in Vietnam, a fixture of family gatherings and Tết. Each player gets three cards from a standard 52-card deck, bets on them, and the best hand wins the pot. It is close to Bài Cào (three-card baccarat), with one big difference: special hands — Sáp, Liêng and Ảnh — beat any points total. This guide covers a round, the hand rankings, scoring, the exact odds of every hand, and the casino game closest to it.

How a round of Liêng is played

  1. Ante (tiền sàn): before the deal every player puts the same amount into the pot.
  2. Deal: the dealer gives each player three cards face down. You look at yours and keep them hidden.
  3. Betting: in turn, each player raises (tố), calls (theo) or folds (úp), losing what they have already put in.
  4. Showdown: when betting ends, the players still in turn their cards over and the best hand takes the whole pot. If everyone else folds, the last player wins without showing.

A table usually has 2 to 6 players.

Liêng hand rankings, highest first

  1. Sáp (three of a kind): three cards of the same rank, for example three kings. The strongest hand. Between two sáp, the higher rank wins, from 2 up to ace.
  2. Liêng (run): three consecutive ranks in any suits, for example 7-8-9. Both A-2-3 and Q-K-A count, and Q-K-A is the highest liêng.
  3. Ảnh (picture hand): three picture cards — jacks, queens and kings — that do not make a sáp or a liêng, for example J-Q-J. Weaker than a liêng, stronger than any points hand.
  4. Points (bài điểm): every other hand is scored by points (below).

Three lieng hands on green felt: three kings (sap), seven-eight-nine (a lieng run) and jack-queen-jack (anh)

How points are counted

  • 2 to 9 count their face value.
  • 10, J, Q and K count 0.
  • Ace counts 1.

Add the three cards and keep only the last digit. For example 8 + 7 + 9 = 24, so the hand is worth 4 points. The best points hand is 9, and between two points hands the higher number wins.

Liêng odds: how often each hand is dealt

A 52-card deck gives exactly 22,100 different three-card hands. Counting every one under the rules above (A-2-3 and Q-K-A are liêng; J-Q-K is a liêng, not an ảnh):

Hand Number of hands Chance of being dealt it
Sáp 52 0.24% (about 1 in 425)
Liêng 768 3.48% (about 1 in 29)
Ảnh 144 0.65% (about 1 in 153)
9 points 2,080 9.41%
8 points 2,096 9.48%
7 points 2,144 9.70%
0 to 6 points 14,816 67.04%

Two things stand out. First, an ảnh is rarer than a liêng (144 hands against 768) but still ranks below it: the order is tradition, not rarity. Second, only about 4.4% of deals give you a special hand at all. Most rounds are settled on points, and each points total from 0 to 9 comes up roughly equally often, about 9–10% each — which is why betting and bluffing decide so much of the game.

Liêng terms

  • Tiền sàn: the ante everyone pays before the deal.
  • Tố: raise — bet more than the current amount.
  • Theo: call — match the current bet to stay in.
  • Úp / bỏ: fold — give up the hand and what you have bet so far.
  • Tố tất: all-in — bet everything you have left.

Playing three-card games online

Liêng itself is rarely found in international online casinos. The closest live tables are three-card games: 20Bet’s live casino lists Three Card Poker, Triple Card Poker and Teen Patti in its Poker section. They are played against the dealer rather than other players, so the betting differs from Liêng, but the three-card hand reading carries over. If you want to play for real money, set a budget first.
