Asian Handicap Explained: How 0, -0.25, -0.75 and -1.25 Lines Settle

October 9, 2026 Asian Handicap Explained: How 0, -0.25, -0.75 and -1.25 Lines Settle

Asian handicap is a football bet with only two sides. The stronger team starts the match a set number of goals behind — the handicap — and you settle the bet on the score after that handicap is applied. Because the line moves in quarter goals, a draw is either removed or turned into a partial result, and that is where newcomers get lost. This guide covers the three kinds of line, how quarter lines like -0.25 and -0.75 split your stake, a full win/loss table, and how the odds turn into a return. In Vietnam it is called kèo châu Á or kèo chấp; in American sports the same idea is the point spread, quoted in points.

How Asian handicap works

The bookmaker gives the weaker team a head start measured in goals. At full time you add the handicap to the real score and see who is ahead. If Team A gives Team B one goal (A -1, B +1):

  • A wins 2-0: after the handicap it is 1-0 to A, so A -1 wins.
  • A wins 1-0: after the handicap it is level, so both sides are refunded.
  • Draw or B wins: B +1 wins.

The team giving the handicap (minus sign) is the favourite; the team receiving it (plus sign) is the underdog. The two sides always mirror each other: if the favourite is -0.75, the underdog is +0.75. Unlike the three-way 1X2 market (home, draw, away), Asian handicap only has two outcomes to choose from.

The three kinds of line

Lines move in steps of a quarter goal. These are the ones you will see most, with the names Vietnamese bettors use for them:

Line Type Vietnamese name How it settles
0 Whole Đồng banh Refund if the match is drawn
0.25 (0 and 0.5) Quarter Đồng nửa Stake split across 0 and 0.5
0.5 Half Nửa trái Win or lose, never a refund
0.75 (0.5 and 1) Quarter Nửa một Stake split across 0.5 and 1
1 Whole Một trái Refund if the margin is exactly one goal
1.25 (1 and 1.5) Quarter Một trái rưỡi Stake split across 1 and 1.5
1.5 Half Trái rưỡi Win or lose, never a refund

Handicap 0 settles exactly like draw no bet: pick a team, win if it wins, get your stake back on a draw.

How quarter lines split your stake

On a quarter line your stake is split into two equal halves, placed on the two neighbouring lines at the same odds, and each half is settled on its own. 22bet’s sports rules (section 12.4) describe it this way: a +1.25 bet is two half bets on +1 and +1.5, and the payout is the sum of the two. Their worked example uses Villarreal +0.75 against Real Madrid -0.75:

  • Villarreal +0.75 is half on +0.5 and half on +1. If Villarreal lose 0-1, the +0.5 half loses and the +1 half is refunded — a half loss. A 1-1 draw wins both halves; a 0-2 defeat loses both.
  • Real Madrid -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1. A 0-1 Madrid win is a half win (the -0.5 half wins, the -1 half is refunded). A 1-1 draw loses the bet; a 0-2 Madrid win wins it in full.

Likewise -0.25 is half on 0 and half on -0.5, and -1.25 is half on -1 and half on -1.5. A quarter line can therefore end in a full win, a full loss, a half win or a half loss.

Win/loss table for the favourite

Results for a bet on the favourite, by its winning margin at full time. A bet on the underdog at the mirrored line is the opposite: a win becomes a loss, a half win a half loss, and a push stays a push.

Favourite’s line Wins by 3+ Wins by 2 Wins by 1 Draw Loses
0 Win Win Win Push Loss
-0.25 Win Win Win Half loss Loss
-0.5 Win Win Win Loss Loss
-0.75 Win Win Half win Loss Loss
-1 Win Win Push Loss Loss
-1.25 Win Win Half loss Loss Loss
-1.5 Win Win Loss Loss Loss
-1.75 Win Half win Loss Loss Loss
-2 Win Push Loss Loss Loss

Read it by row: at -0.75, a one-goal win is a half win for the favourite, and the underdog at +0.75 in the same match is a half loss.

Odds and what you get back

With decimal odds a winning bet returns stake × odds, stake included. Take 100 on the favourite at -0.75, odds 1.90:

  • Wins by 2 or more: 190 back (90 profit).
  • Wins by exactly 1 (half win): the 50 on -0.5 wins and returns 95; the 50 on -1 is refunded. Total 145 back (45 profit).
  • Draw or loss: the 100 is lost.

Both sides of a handicap are usually priced close together, such as 1.90 and 1.90. As probabilities that is 1 ÷ 1.90 ≈ 52.6% each, 105.3% in total — the extra 5.3% is the bookmaker’s margin. Asian boards often show the same prices in Malaysian or Hong Kong odds (1.90 becomes 0.90); see Malaysian, Hong Kong and Indonesian odds explained.

Things to check before you bet

  • What time counts. Full-time handicaps are settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time at most bookmakers; extra time and penalties do not count unless the market says so. Read the market rules first.
  • First-half handicaps are a separate market settled on the score at half time.
  • Lines and odds move before and during the match. The line that counts is the one on your bet slip when you placed it.
  • For a bet on the number of goals rather than the winner, see Asian total goals, which uses the same half, whole and quarter lines.

Where to bet on Asian handicap

22bet runs Asian handicap markets on football, and its sports rules — available in Vietnamese — set out the half-stake split described above. 20Bet has its own sportsbook plus the SBO and Saba (IBC) lobbies inside its sports section. For welcome offers and markets side by side, see Vietnam betting sites.

Bet responsibly

Understanding a handicap tells you how a bet settles, not how a match will end. The margin is built into every price, so over time the book keeps a share. Only bet what you can afford to lose, set a limit before each round of fixtures and never bet more to win back losses. For adults 18 and over only.

Asian Handicap FAQ

What is Asian handicap in football?

A two-way bet where the stronger team starts a set number of goals behind. You add the handicap to the final score to settle it. Quarter and whole-number lines remove the draw or turn it into a refund or a half result.

What does -0.75 Asian handicap mean?

Your stake is split between -0.5 and -1. If your team wins by 2 or more you win in full; by exactly 1 you win half (the -0.5 half wins, the -1 half is refunded); a draw or a defeat loses the bet.

What does -0.25 Asian handicap mean?

Your stake is split between 0 and -0.5. A win for your team wins the bet in full; a draw loses half (the 0 half is refunded, the -0.5 half loses); a defeat loses it all.

What does +0.25 Asian handicap mean?

It is the underdog side of -0.25: half on 0 and half on +0.5. A win for your team wins in full, a draw wins half (the +0.5 half wins, the 0 half is refunded), and a defeat loses the bet.

Is Asian handicap 0 the same as draw no bet?

Yes. On a 0 line you win if your team wins, lose if it loses, and get your stake back on a draw — exactly how draw no bet settles.

What is the difference between Asian handicap and 1X2?

1X2 has three outcomes (home, draw, away) and no handicap. Asian handicap has only two sides and uses the handicap to balance the two teams, so a draw is either removed or settled as a refund or a half result.
